Article 2- Gay Marriage
Reporting from Honolulu, Marilyn Elias of USA Today talks about specific issues on gay marriage in the article “Psychologists to endorse gay marriage.” The American Psychological Association adopted a policy that expresses two issues, which gay couples, must deal with. These issues are that gays should be allowed the right to be married in a civil ceremony and if they are parents they deserve all legal rights that every straight parent receives. Diane Halpern, president of APA, whish is the nations’ largest group of psychologists, says “We’re going out on a limb,” “But we’re doing what we should be doing.” This specific group has policies that oppose discrimination against all gays. Halpern also says “Many members are concerned about political actions to stop gay marriages.”
When you keep gays from marrying you will be putting a great amount of stress on the couple and if they have children you risk damaging the child when you don’t allow their parents to be married, even though they’re gay, in the child’s eyes they are their parents. I do agree that gays’ deserve all rights as a straight couple, I also believe that they deserve every right that straight parents recieve. Some people believe that kids raised by gays have poorer mental health than those raised by straight parents, but Charlotte Patterson, psychologist from the University of Virginia says “The research is limited but growing and improving in quality,” theres no evidence showing that they have poorer mental health. My opinion is that as long as children have people who and care for them the child will be perfectly fine, both physically and mentally. I believe what Aimee Gelnaw says, “Preventing gay parents from marrying hurts thier kids, as does denying them equal rights to insurance and Social Security benefits.”
Marilyn Elias is a reporter for USA TODAY, which shows ethos. Gay marriage is a huge issue and is growing stronger every day. I personally don’t believe in gay marriage but if people are going to be together anyways they at least need the same rights as everyone else in America.

Gay Marriage-Article 1
Justice Anthony Kennedy, of the Supreme Court, gives his personal opinion, to the Wall Street Journal, on whether gay marriage should stay a state’s issue or whether it should become a national issue. He Starts by saying: “We reamain opposed to federal intergerence in this issue, believing that issues of family life and law are best settled in state legislatures. Yet given that way activist courts have turned gay marriage into a national issue, it’s no surprise that congress joined the fray.” Mr. Kennedy is stating that he believes that this issue should stay at the state level. “The Senate also realizes that they are unlikely to get many more than the votes they received last time this issue was brought up. The Constitutional amendment requires 2/3 majority and only one Democrat, Nebraska’s Ben Nelson, is on board.” In a way this bill was never meant to actually pass, but to excite the people about nationalizing a law. Kennedy strongly feels that this issues is better off at the state level, mainly because most of the states have already been approving issues on gay marriage.
I personally believe that if most states are approving gay marriage, then why not go ahead and see how it would do as a serious national issue. If it doesn’t pass than it can go back to being at the state level. That way you wouldn’t really be losing anything by attempting it at the national level. Though I clearly believe that gay marriage is wrong, I also think that regardless of being gay everyone deserves the same rights as everyone else. The problem is that the Federal Government wants the states to decide this issue, but then they don’t like or agree with the decision that was made.
Mr. Anthony Kennedy is on the Supreme Court, which clearly establishes his ethos. He also states how many States have amendments protecting “traditional” marriages and how many have statutes doing the same, also brings to our attention that the Federal Court struck down a ban on gay marriage last year even though 70% of the residents voted for it. This is an example of logos.
